Dr. Sally Barbour, Professor in the Department of French Studies, has translated and will perform in a staged reading of The Violins of Autumn, a play by Michael Huie of the WFU Department of Theatre and Dance, on January 19, 2019. This work was sponsored by IPLACe.

The Violins of Autumn brings to life the reality of ordinary people who were part of the Resistance during the German Occupation of France from 1940-1944. The play is based on the journal of Paulette Coÿne Roche, who describes not only the everyday privations and anxieties of war, but also the heroic acts she and her family, friends and co-workers carried out in resistance to the occupying forces.  The Occupation forced her to end her pursuit of a law degree, saw her father imprisoned by the Germans, and postponed her marriage to André Roche, currently a resident of Winston-Salem. This staged reading of the play features Lillie Burrow (WFU 2019, Presidential Scholar for Theatre) and Sally Barbour (Professor, WFU Department of French Studies). The performance was featured in an article in the Winston-Salem Journal.

There will be two performances on Saturday, January 19th, at 2pm and 7pm, in the Ring Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center on the Wake Forest campus. Admission is free and open to the public. A Q & A will follow both performances, and Mr. Roche will be available for discussion after the 7pm performance.
